The island of Ireland is the most westerly country of the European Continent. It measures approximately 486 kms (302 miles) long by 275 kms (171 miles) wide. Comprising of 32 counties. 26 making up the Republic and the remaining 6 those of Northern Ireland (part of the United Kingdom). Area: 27,136 sq. miles (70,283 sq. km) Capital: Dublin Population: 4 million approx. Principal language is English - with Gaelic spoken fluently in several rural Irish areas known as "the Gaelteacht". Currency: Euro - € (Republic); and Sterling - £ (Nth. The people are friendly, welcoming and talkative - don't seek directions if you are in a hurry!!! Ireland enjoys a very high standard of living and was recently ranked 7th highest in Europe for its cost of living. An agricultural nation whose main markets for exports are to neighbouring Britain.
